According to a new study, a six-week CrossFit exercise programme can lead to improved control of blood sugar levels and decreased risk of heart disease in people with type II diabetes.

The study conducted by The Physiological Society suggested that the high-intensity workout program can do a lot besides just keeping you fit and fine. In type 2 diabetes, the body either doesn’t produce enough insulin, or it resists insulin – the hormone that controls sugar levels. People with Type II diabetes are at significantly higher risk of heart disease. Exercise, which is a primary focus for managing diabetes, has been shown to improve the body’s ability to control sugar levels by making the body more sensitive to the insulin produced.

The good thing about CrossFit workouts is that it is highly intense and does not take a long time to complete. This means you can achieve a great result in a short period of time. Hence, CrossFit offers a time-effective exercise approach for type 2 diabetics who are mostly overweight or obese and people struggling to maintain daily exercise.

For the current study, the researchers recruited thirteen overweight/obese patients with type II diabetes for a 6-week CrossFit exercise programme. The researchers assessed participants’ blood sugar levels and insulin sensitivity – both before and after the exercise programme – in addition to their blood chemistries and blood pressure, which were tested to predict heart disease risk.

Test results from the post-exercise intervention showed significant improvements in insulin sensitivity and heart disease risk factors. Interestingly, the study found that these improvements appeared to be similar to the sort of changes expected from more traditional exercise interventions, despite participants spending considerably less time exercising than such guidelines recommend, news agency ANI reported.

The research, published in the journal Experimental Physiology, concluded that CrossFit improves the ability of the body to control blood sugar levels by reducing the amount of insulin required.Earlier, 2013 study published in The Journal of Strength and Conditioning showed significant improvements in body composition, including weight loss and muscle gain, among people following a CrossFit plan – regardless of their level of initial fitness. Turns out, this high-intensity workout program can be beneficial for people trying to lose weight fast as it can help them burn more calories and in less time.
