What to have when trying to lose weight?
Fruits and vegetables both are an important part of a healthy and balanced diet necessary for weight loss. Making a choice between the two can be quite difficult. If we consider the nutrition value and calorie content, both fruits and veggies have their own set of benefits. But if you have to measure their effectiveness with regard to weight loss, what should you choose? Let’s discover the answer to this question:
As per a recent study published in the journal PLOS Medicine, non-starchy veggies, like Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and kale are beneficial for cutting down belly fat, but fruits like berries, apples, and pears are considered the best. The study tracked the weight loss of over 1 lakh American women and men, between 1986 and 2010.
It concluded that fruits are the ultimate winner when it comes to weight loss.
Smoothies for weight loss
Some other interesting findings of the study were that smoothies work great for weight loss because it contains different fruits and is high in fiber. Moreover, including apples and pears in your daily diet can make you lose extra 1 kilo. But this certainly does not mean that veggies are not good for health. It is just that people who consume more veggies lose less weight. If you are aiming to lose weight by eating only veggies, include soya, tofu, cauliflower and spinach in your diet.
Fruits vs veggies
The study clearly indicates that fruits are any day better than vegetables when it comes to weight loss. As per researchers, fruits are more diet-friendly as compared to vegetables. This is because of the healthy calorie content and the amount of antioxidants present in them. Fruit consumption also increases the satiety level and hence makes us binge less on unhealthy foods.
However, you’d be surprised to know that this is the only study which suggests that fruits are better than vegetables. As per another study published in Journal Epidemiology and Community Health in 2014, it was found that vegetables are a better option due to their “protective effect”.
What should you do?
As per the University College of London, consuming canned foods increases the risk of statistical deaths. The study also indicates that eating fresh vegetables was more beneficial in altering health issues than fruits. But this does not mean that fruits are bad for health. The study only established that fruits may be less beneficial than vegetables for weight loss. So include both in your diet, but have more veggies as compared to fruits.
