4 reasons you should perform it everyday
Performing breathing exercises are considered essential to stay healthy and fit. Just like any other form of breathing exercise, reverse breathing also has multiple health benefits. Reverse breathing or Taoist breathing reverses the natural in and out movement of the stomach that happens during normal breathing. This breathing technique relaxes you, reduces stress, improves digestion and calms your body. It also enables you to become aware of your emotions and increase your meditative focus.
In Taoist breathing, you don’t have to restrict your breathing as it can create tension and have an opposite effect on the health.
How to do it
Step 1: Sit down comfortably on the ground with both your legs stacked one above the other. Place both your hands one above the other on your lower abdomen. The tips of the thumbs should touch your navel.
Step 2: Inhale and as you do so gently draw your abdomen inwards, toward your spine.
Step 3: Now as you exhale, let your abdomen expand outward naturally. Repeat the process 5-7 times.
Benefits of reverse breathing
Breathing exercise is an essential part of any workout routine. Reverse breathing allows oxygenated breath to permeate the body. The four health benefits of reverse breathing are as follows:
Strengthen Abdominal Muscles
When performed regularly, reverse breathing can help to strengthen your abdomen muscles. When you breathe in, your perineum muscles (the muscles between the anus and the pubis) are contracted and when you exhale, these muscles are relaxed and simultaneously your abdomen muscles are pushed out and down.
Stronger Immune System
It is believed that reverse breathing helps to spread more oxygen throughout the body, which assists in better functioning of different body parts. More amount of oxygen reaches your tissues and cells that make your immune system stronger. The process helps to get rid of harmful bacteria and viruses.
Increases lung capacity
This breathing technique allows more oxygen to reach your lungs, increasing your lung capacity. Reverse breathing forces your diaphragm to expand entirely, creating a space to be filled with air.
If you are falling sick more then often, then stress can be a reason. Being stressed makes your immune system weak and you fall sick quite easily. Reverse breathing calms your mind, reduces stress and keeps you healthy.
